Project Background
The hardtop project for the Volkswagen Amarok pickup model started in 2014, when the Volkswagen Group approached our company to develop a unique, premium-quality bed cover. The task presented a special challenge: the product had to combine practicality with aesthetics while meeting the VW Group’s stringent quality standards.
The Amarok is one of the leading models in the premium pickup segment, so all accessories must match that standard. The hardtop is not merely a functional element but also a design feature that defines the vehicle’s overall appearance, increasing cargo security and usability in varying weather conditions.
Technology
RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) technology was used throughout the project, enabling series production of complex-geometry, high-strength composite parts. This process ensures excellent surface quality and consistent wall thickness – both essential for automotive applications.
The hardtop structure is made from glass-fibre-reinforced polyester composite with a sandwich core of foamed PU material, providing outstanding thermal and acoustic insulation. The exterior surface is Class A quality, meaning it blends seamlessly with the vehicle body after painting.
Manufacturing Process
The first step was master-pattern production, CNC-machined from a CAD model on a 5-axis machine with high precision. Next came tooling – ready-to-use composite moulds for series production. With RTM technology the cycle time was optimised for efficient series manufacturing.
After CNC trimming and machining of the raw parts, surface treatment and painting follow. Our paint line ensures that the exact colour shades prescribed by Volkswagen are achieved. During final quality control every single product undergoes rigorous inspection, including dimensional accuracy, surface quality and fit checks.

Quality Assurance & Certifications
As a supplier to the Volkswagen Group, our company holds ISO 9001:2015 certification and meets automotive standard requirements. Throughout the hardtop project every element of our quality management system was applied, from incoming raw-material inspection to final checks.
Every batch of products comes with traceable documentation containing material origin, manufacturing parameters and inspection results. This traceability is a fundamental requirement in the automotive industry and ensures quality consistency.
Results & Continuation
Since the project launch in 2014, more than 1,000 hardtops have been manufactured for the Volkswagen Group. The product has been very well received on the market and has become a popular accessory among Amarok owners. Thanks to continuous improvements we have optimised the manufacturing process, reduced cycle time and improved cost efficiency.
